Anxieties a) Being newly diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease and ME, would I be able to cope or would I get fatigued and my words not come properly? b) The journey to and from College by train, could I always physically manage it? c) What would the Group be like? Will they be friendly and accept me? All younger than me? Expectations a) To improve my listening and communication skills b) To understand and to connect to feelings better c) To know my limitations d) To gain an understanding of Helper & Helpee Outcome On arrival, I met two nice ladies and I instantly felt less nervous. When we met the Tutors, I felt even better as they were friendly.The group are a mixture of young and more mature students so I didn’t feel like I stood out as an older student.In groups of three, we discussed the difference between a Helper, Helpee and a Counsellor and Client.. This was an interesting exercise which I found enjoyable but a bit frustrating at a point. Our group started to discuss this and one lady suggested that a 'Helper' was only ever going to be a 'short term' occurrence. I mentioned that it could also be longer term depending on the level of support required and that it is 'casual' and not professional. The third lady and I gave examples and she seemed to agree.When we were asked to relay what our group came up with, the same lady stated that we thought that a 'Helper's' support will only be a short term thing. The lady also misunderstood the third member of our group. I felt awkward in disagreeing with this as this is not what I had felt or stated.
