Legalize It
The most obvious reason that marijuana should be legalized is that there is no good reason for it to be illegal. The, naturally grown, plant is commonly known as marijuana and is recognized throughout the world. It is a plant known for giving a “high” to the user and is illegal in most countries. It’s an endless debate whether or whether not marijuana should be legalized but it’s the same debate over cigarettes or alcohol. Individuals should be able to choose for themselves. Criminalization of marijuana does not help the country in any way. Marijuana should be legalized for multiple reasons including, but not excluded to, it’s fallacitical history of criminalization, its medicinal purposes and applications, and the dangers that arise to its failing prohibition.
Marijuana was criminalized in the early 1900’s based on racism, protection of corporate profits, and fear produced by falsehoods. The earliest prejudice in America against marijuana was racially driven to keep “whites” separate from other races. Migrant farm workers came to work the larger plantations in the southwestern USA who used marijuana recreationally, leading to the outlawing of hemp or “loco weed” and beginning the long history of degradation. Following this, it was deeply rooted in the Latin and Black jazz communities and marijuana was often blamed for the “sadist” music as well as excessively violent behavior. Slanderous propaganda campaigns began to protect corporate profits and assist ambitious political figures, such as Harry J Anslinger, to climb their way up the federal ladder. Realizing the threat to the timber industry posed by hemp, the industry began to dump large amounts of money into the waiting hands of political lobbyists.
