1.1 Explain the teaching role and responsibilities in education and training.
As a teacher, one of your main roles is to motivate and inspire your learners to develop their abilities and aspiration to learn. A teacher’s role is not just to teach a subject or about preparing the learners for assessment. It is also to inspire your learners to change and develop their personal, social and professional abilities to the best of their ability. The ultimate aim for a teacher, is to aid the learner in understanding how to take responsibility of their own learning and development. A teacher does this by developing lesson plans, planning and preparing learning and teaching activities, that take into account the needs and well-being of individual learners as well groups of learners. Some key aspects of the role may be:
• Carrying out initial and/or diagnostic assessments
• Clear communication with their learners and other professionals
• Promoting appropriate behaviour and respect for others
• Identifying individual learner needs and meeting them
• Being aware of the support systems in place, should they be required
• Being organised
• Being reflective, learning from both the successes and the failures.
As a teacher, a primary responsibility is to ensure that learners are enrolled on to the correct course, in terms of meeting their educational needs, abilities and aspirations. Responsibilities also mean ensuring that the learners are on the appropriate course in terms of meeting their award and organisational requirements. In order to do this, the teacher will have responsibility for the following:
