Maintaining Ethics in Business
Situations arise daily that put our ethics to the test; did you tell a lie today, did you return the extra change the cashier gave you? Did you blame your tardiness on traffic when you overslept ? All actions, no matter how big or small, relate in some way to our moral conscious and our value system. The world of business is no different. In fact, we all know that business can cause one to compromise his or her value system for the sake of profit or glory. Though earning profit is no doubt the biggest reason people go into business, I don’t believe that those who work in for-profit organizations surrender their right to moral conscience, though it can be very easy to go down this road. I think it’s possible, though it may be hard, to maintain one’s integrity and morality while making a profit legally, with a sound mind and conscious.
Through the years, many cases of corruption in business have come to light in the news. Scandals in relation to profit earning in business happen far too often, bringing to the public’s attention the dirty inner workings of some of the nation’s biggest businesses. When scandals are released to the public, it gives all businesses a bad name because people assume a business that is run and governed by morals is too good to be true. Also, high profile scandals make the public skeptical about human behavior. Scandals in business are not limited to major corporations, but can surely be found in small or local businesses also. Almost anybody who works in a business environment will surely be faced with an ethical problem or dilemma at some point or another.
