Mary Kom
Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom is an Indian Boxer who brings glory for India in 2012 Olympics by winning the bronze medal, when the game was introduced for the first time in Olympics; and a five time World Champion on her belt. This is an expert from her autobiography “Unbreakable” where she described how she discovered her passion for boxing, her initial days of training, even going into details of the politics among sports bodies, both at state and national level.
She described that during her stay at Sports Authority of India (SAI) Takyel in Imphal she had tried a number of games and her teacher Gosana, tried to find out which game was best suitable for her. According to him, Mary Kom should go for Gymnastics. But, she thought, she was over-aged for the game. She was always attracted towards the game with more action, like martial arts, etc. Soon she left SAI Takyel before the selection of athletes.
At that time in the 1998, Dingko Singh won the gold medal in Bangkok Asian Games and there was a buzz around the boxing in the State. Mary Kom, secretly wished to be like him and decided to be a boxer. It was a chance, she met with Rebika Chiru, a boxer, who set her right in the path and advised her to join the SAI Khuman Lampak.
Marry Kom, inquired for the chief coach L Ibomcha of SAI Khuman Lampak and asked him to teach her boxing. Ibomcha was at first taken aback but also arouse his curiosity on her boldness. He asked her to sit outside and after a while he came out and asked more about Marry. He was not sure how could Marry met his strict training schedule, but later agreed to teach her and Marry Kom able to follow her dream.
