Sir, one important model in business research and scientific research is hypothesis testing. This would involve making a guess about the conclusion of an event. After making a guess about the conclusion the next step would be to gather evidence or data to make a decision as to whether we should accept or reject the hypothesis. You could also think about it this way, a hypothesis is an opinion about the value of something for a population. This data is gathered from a typical sample from that population to make a decision on whether it’s true (Colorado Technical University, 2014). Using the military for an example, the purchase of computers from vendors like Dell and Hewlett Packard is prevalent. Do the computers from Dell really run faster than the computers from Hewlett Packard?
Expressing a statement that defines a probability or guess to test and develop a statement that is the opposite is the first step in conducting a hypothesis test (Colorado Technical University, 2014). The opposite statement is represented as H0 called a null hypothesis, we cannot prove the effects are real, but may decide the effects are real (Stockburger, n.d.). The alternative hypothesis is represented as H1.
Null Hypothesis
• Computers from Dell do not run faster than those from Hewlett Packard
Alternative Hypothesis
• Computers from Dell do run faster than those from Hewlett Packard
The null hypothesis is what’s being tested, the ultimate result of the hypothesis test is rejecting or accepting it. The importance level of the test is the risk that the organization is willing to take by rejecting the null hypothesis when it is in fact true. The organization must decide this level before starting the data collection, this will determine how large the sample should be. Hypothesis testing normally relies on a sample and not an entire population so there is a chance of two kinds of errors (Colorado...
