Monsanto; squeezing more and releasing less
The Monsanto Company is a multi-national US-based agricultural biotechnology corporation. It is the world's leading producer of the herbicide glyphosate, marketed as “Roundup”. Monsanto is also the leading producer of genetically engineered (GE) seed; it provides the technology in 90% of the genetically engineered seeds used in the US market and Its headquarter is in Creve Coeur, Missouri. Monsanto ad “How can we squeeze more food from a Raindrop?” contained in the October 2010 issue of The New Yorker emphasizes three concrete advantages; “producing more”, “conserving more”, “improving farmers’ lives”; but on the other hand statistics and research reveals they are; threatening other species and organisms so as to enhance genetically modified crops, polluting natural resources and steadily orchestrating the extinction of natural seed, stimulating suicidal deaths of hundreds of thousands of farmers in India and decrease in jobs for the agricultural labor-force.
According to the Monsanto ad, the first aim Monsanto looks to achieve in providing enough food for a doubling population is to “produce more”; in contrast they are threatening other species and organisms so as to enhance genetically modified crops. (Institute of Science and Society Emergency! Pathogen New to Science Found in Roundup Ready GM Crops.) Professor Don Huber; a professor emeritus at Purdue University has spent the last 40 years of his career as a scientist working on professional and military agencies that evaluate and prepare for natural and man-made biological threats including germ warfare and disease outbreaks. In 2011 Professor Don Huber who is also an internationally recognized plant pathologist wrote a confidential letter to Thomas Vilsack the US Agriculture secretary, alerting them that a group of scientist had discovered a new pathogen. The new pathogen was found in high population particularly in crops that had been...
