This article addresses the need to carry out an effective and efficient literature review when conducting research of any kind. Its importance cannot be underestimated as it provides a review of a body of knowledge as well as a basis for the research undertaken. We consider the purpose and importance of a literature review before focussing on the strategy and procedure to be undertaken for reviewing literature. Finally emphasis is placed on useful guidelines to researchers/authors in ensuring a practical literature review. A holistic approach is called for in planning the research journey.
INTRODUCTION
A literature review is viewed as a vital component in any type of research. As the most basic point of departure, no type of research should be conducted without a preliminary literature review. A literature review entails a systematic and structured process of identifying relevant literature to be used in writing a research proposal and eventually a thesis. The literature review is ongoing and impacts every stage of the research process (Jones and Olson, 1996). However, besides purely academic purposes (a thesis), all researchers/authors who engage in research need to conduct some form of background reading, a literature review.
