Nurse Leader Interview
The Surgery Department is a large unit composed of three ambulatory services including surgical, plastic and vascular surgery. The main objective is striving for excellence on every treatment experience given to the health plan members. Just like any health organization, the surgery department is mandated to follow local, state, and federal regulations and standards. They need certain qualities of a leader to handle a high demanding group. Furthermore, a strong leader is not only capable of leading people to different opinions and perspectives, but they need to thrive for it (Nash,2015).
I chose my manager to participate in this interview. Her name is M.L a nurse for 35 years. Her nursing background includes a staff nurse in a medical - surgical unit and gastroenterology department in one of the hospitals in California . Started her managerial position for Urgent Care Center at San Diego Ca for a few years. She held this position for three years. When a new medical office opened in in Anaheim in 2000, she applied and took the job as an administrator for Surgery Department. Her role includes collaboration with physicians and other health care teams. She also develops, implements and monitors policies and procedures of the department that support its goals and business objectives.
When asked about how she would differentiate management from leadership, she quickly answered and defined leadership as allowing her team for autonomy in decision making but continuously guiding them and facilitating them in reaching their goals (McBride & Eugene,2011). She explained management as directing and controlling the staff, resources, structures, and systems (Bargau,2015). Her definition of both is similar to mine. We both agreed that a good leader encourages open communication and team participation in decision making. Leadership existed even years ago.
