Physical abuse
Definition:
Physical abuse could involve, contact intended to cause feelings of intimidation, injury or other types of physical suffering or harm.
Sexual abuse
Definition:
Sexual abuse is forcing undesired sexual behaviour by one person onto another.
Emotional/psychological abuse
Definition:
Could involve threats or actions to cause physical or mental harm, humiliation or isolation.
Financial abuse
Definition:
Is the illegal or unauthorised use of a person’s money, property or other valuables.
Institutional abuse
Definition:
Involves the failure of an organisation to provide professional and appropriate services to vulnerable people.
Self-neglect
Definition:
Is a behavioural condition, were the individual neglects to attend to their basic needs.
Neglect by others
Definition:
Is a passive form of abuse were the perpetrator is responsible for the care of someone unable to care for themselves.

Physical Abuse
Signs/symptoms:
* Injuries in the shape of objects.
* Unexplained weight changes.
* Changes in behaviour.
* Medication being lost.
Sexual Abuse
Signs/symptoms:
* STD’S / Pregnancy
* Bruises around genital areas
* Someone trying to take control of body image, i.e. anorexia, bulimia, self-harm.
Emotional Abuse
Signs/symptoms:
* Low self esteem
* Sleep disturbance
* Increased incontinence
Financial Abuse
Signs/symptoms:
* Unusual transactions.
* Bills not being paid.
* Loss of assets
Institutional Abuse
Signs/symptoms:
* Treating adults like children.
* Lack of choices.
* Lack of privacy & dignity.
Self Neglect:
Signs/symptoms:
* Lack of personal care.
* Untreated medical conditions.
* Continuous weight loss.
