Activity 1 – Safeguarding within the Health and Social Care Sector
During 2013 an elderly lady called Gloria Foster was brought to the attention of the media, after being admitted to hospital. She had been left for nine days in her home, without any food, medication or water. She was found by a community nurse in her bed. She later died two weeks later in hospital of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and pulmonary thromboembolism.
She was being cared for by an agency called CareFirst24, which was raided by the UK Border Agency and Police, and was forced to shut down. Surrey County Council was informed of Carefirst24's closure, but failed to ensure alternative care was put in its place.
Surrey County Council, should have made sure alternative care was put in place, to safeguard Mrs Foster, they did it for other clients which were on CareFirst24's books, but failed to put anything in place for Mrs Foster.
From the councils point of view, they may have thought, that because she was self funded, that she would arrange/sort out a care service of her own choice.
But taking into account that she was also suffering from alzhiemers disease, so she wouldn't have been in the right frame of mind.
Abuse In Elder Care Percentages
The Mean (average) of the types of elder abuse is 20%, which is the total of the pie chart 8+11+12+34+35=100, then divide 100, by how many portions of the pie chart which is 5.
5 types of abuse psychological, financial, physical, social, and neglect. So 100 / 5 = 20.
The Range is the highest, take away the lowest number, so highest 35 – lowest 8, which equals 27%
The Median is all values placed in order, then the middle number, so 8, 11, 12, 34, 35. So the middle number is 12%
