1a. Diversity means difference. It also means that even though people do have things in common, they also have a lot of differences and are unique in lots of ways. Diversity is about recognizing and valuing the differences such as the visible and non-visible factors such as culture, personality, race, gender, disability, religion and belief act. By recognising and valuing these differences, we can make a better environment which makes everybody feel valued despite any different characteristics they may have.
1b. Equality means that everyone is treated equally and fairly and in no way less favourable despite their different characteristics such as gender, age, disability, race, religion etc. It also means that each individual has the right to have their needs met and the organisation should make reasonable adjustments to meet the individual’s needs.
1c. Inclusion means to be fully included and to make everybody feel respected and valued. It is also to allow them to participate in all activities and giving equal opportunities to allow them the right to have the same treatment as everybody else despite their ethnicity, gender, age, religion or sexual orientation.
1.2 The effects of discrimination can be physical, emotional or both mixed. Discrimination can make the child feel different from the other children and this could make them become isolated which will bring their self-esteem down. The physical effects of discrimination may include headaches, weight loss, poor appetite, eating disorders, poor health, self-harming and attempted suicide.
The emotional effects of discrimination could include the child starting to believe that the persecutors are right, their self-esteem plummeting, feeling unwanted and insecure and developing anxiety and depression.
