The impact of persuasion is explored in the play Othello. Discuss this statement in relation to your understanding of the play with close reference to the text.
The play ‘Othello’ written by one of the most influential writers of all time ‘William Shakespeare’ is one of Shakespeare’s four tragic plays. In this play, the impact of persuasion is explored in its darker natures, and its ability to be used in order to exploit and to manipulate, all in order to bring about selfish desires and revenge, and also the impact of the inability to persuade and its consequences. It is from these consequenses and processes, that teaches the audiences the dangers of jealousy, the power of words, but most of all, it teaches us about appearances and reality, and William Shakespeare is able to effectively convey these values through the antagonist of the play Iago.
Although not the titular character of the play ‘Othello’, many audiences would believe that the villain of the play ‘Iago’, plays a much larger role then the eponymous character, in relation to the plot and also the illustration of persuation and the impacts it has. The reason why Iago is so vital in the play is because of his uncanny ability to persuade others, allowing him to be able to exploit their weaknesses, and manipulate them to obtain his goals and selfish desires, which in this case is to exact revenge upon Othello, and in order to obtain lieutenantship which he believes was his rightful place anyways.
The endless hatred Iago has for the moor of venice, is one that is never truly justified throughout the play, and the reason for Iago’s ambitious planning of exacting revenge on the moor is never fully understood by the audience. However, what readers and viewers do know, is that Iago is a very cunning and mischievous character, and he has the skill and ability to plan a plan and to obtain whatever his heart wishes.
