PRINCIPLES OF SAFEGUARDING AND PROTECTION IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE
KNOW HOW TO RECOGNISE SIGNS OF ABUSE
      1.1. Define the following types of abuse

  A. Physical abuse is any intentional and unwanted contact with you or something close to your body.   Sometimes physical abuse does not leave a mark.
  B. Sexual abuse is any action that pressures or makes you do something sexually they do not want to do or touching you in a way, you do not like.   Sexual abuse is when someone in a position of power or authority takes advantage of a person’s trust   and respect to involve them in sexual activity
  C. Emotional or psychological abuse can be verbal or non-verbal.   It reduces the person’s confidence.   It leads to humiliation isolation.   It is any treatment that diminishes the sense of identity, dignity and self worth.
  D. Financial abuse is the misuse of a person’s money and assets without their knowledge or consent In the case of an elderly person who cannot make decisions for themselves not in their interest.
  E. Institutional abuse is the mistreatment of people bought about by poor or inadequate care or support or poor practices that affect the whole care setting.   It can occur when the clients wishes or needs are sacrificed for the smooth running of the company or setting. I.e. put to bed early when they prefer to go to bed later.
  F. Self neglect is when a person does not attend to their basic needs i.e. personal hygiene, wearing appropriate clothes, diet ( food and drink), or neglecting any medical condition ( not taking medication)
  G. Neglect by others this is when there is a failure to provide necessary care, guidance or attention for a person who is unable to care for them self and this will cause the person physical, mental or emotional harm.   This could lead to a loss of assets.
