LO 1. Understand the importance of good personal hygiene
AC 1.1 Explain why personal hygiene is important
It is important to limit the risks of infection. Smelling good when working close to individuals is a mark of respect. It makes one feel good, clean, comfortable and valued.
AC 1.2 Describe the effects of poor personal hygiene on health and well-being
The effects of poor personal hygiene on an individual: The person’s skin not being taken care of properly can break down. This can in turn cause sores and can lead to infections and pain. They may as well lose confidence and feel insecure. They may not be comfortable in their own body, their physical health may deteriorate, they are likely to have body odour which will lead to other people avoiding them. This is how health and well-being is affected by poor hygiene.
LO 2. Know how to encourage an individual to maintain personal hygiene
AC 2.1 Explain how to address personal hygiene issues with an individual in a sensitive manner without imposing own values
Whenever I’m addressing a personal hygiene issue I make sure the individual’s needs and choices are met by asking them questions and making sure I am aware of their care plan. I use tact and diplomacy to explain to them what they need to do and how I can support them. By respecting their own choices I help build their self-confidence and this helps improve their self-management.
AC 2.2 Describe how to make an individual aware of the effects of poor hygiene on others
We can make people aware of the effect of poor hygiene on others using health promotion resources e.g. posters, DVDs. Staff must attend training about the spread of infection and diseases and make sure they understand and apply it. This brings a better understanding of the importance of good hygiene. Our social environment also plays a role in making people aware of their hygiene as we can anticipate the reactions of others if we are not clean.
