Services
Production line approach
Line production is a manufacturing process in which each item is repetitively applied to the same operation sequence. In this approach all equipment is set up in a line, or in the order in which it is used. The benefits to this approach include not having to stop or restart the process for multiple products and cost efficiency. Disadvantages include lack of flexibility, and lack of customization.
Self-service approach
The self-service approach enhances the service process by having the customer take a greater role in the production of the service (Jacobs & Chase, 2011). Examples of the self-service approach include automatic teller machines, self-service gas stations, salad bars, and company websites (Jacobs & Chase, 2011).
Personal attention approach
The personal attention approach can be applied to service based companies such high end department stores, beauticians, and any business that offers personalized or individualized attention to each customer. Examples of the personal attention approach include business that send holiday/Christmas cards out to their customers, or businesses that send flowers, gifts, or cards to customers that are celebrating a birthday or other personal holidays or events.
Products
Job shop approach
Job shops include very little standardization. In a job shop, each item or task is completed by hand individually. The benefits to the job shop approach include quality, uniqueness, ease of customization, and flexibility (Mind Tools, 2013)....
