1.1 People communicate to express their needs, give and take information, express their feelings and thoughts, and differentiate themselves, build relationships and friendships, to make comfortable atmosphere for themselves and others. Communication is a two way process. People give each other information to get to know each other and to be able to build trust and to respect each other. Understanding and helping one another to feel secure and comfortable is important. Let them know they are not alone telling about your own feeling, reassure them and show them empathy and compassion. There are many other ways of communication - how we dress gives message to others as well, we are actually telling them what we are feeling. Some gestures as posture and face expression tell a lot to the other person. Person might be saying “I am listening to you” but the way they stand and look at you and their body language is saying the opposite. Also telephone and electronic messages are a different way of communication. We might not be able to meet people face to face but still communicate over the phone, Facebook, Skype, Msn.
1.2 Communication helps people to understand each other’s different point of view, background, beliefs and the way they think about life and environment. Communication makes people feel comfortable and aware of each other’s problems, feelings and thoughts. Also helps them to resolve conflict situations. It makes friendlier secure environment. If people don’t communicate with each other lots of things could go wrong. Such as medication could be repeated again if you don’t tell or write in the care plan another senior might repeat the same medication. Same in regards to food - service user might be allergic to custard, syrup or on other diets if it has not been written in the care plan it could endanger life of service user.
