After two years of initiative on October 5 2010, The Institute of Medicine (IOM) in collaboration with the Robert wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) released the report on recommendations for the profession of nursing. This report mainly focusing on the crucial areas of nursing which are nursing education, nursing practice and nursing leadership.
Impact of the Institute of Medicine Report on the Nursing Education
The professional practices for nurses should be in its fullest extent at their knowledge and training. In this era nursing is considered as a promising career which obtained so much significance over the past years. There are so many programs of nursing which are being offered by number of universities, community colleges and hospital based nursing schools. From the mid-20th century the demand for nursing has been up. There has been a surprising increase in the number of nursing graduates during the last ten years (NLN, 2010b).Now the focus of nursing education is concentrating more on the community health,geriatrics,public health and primary care rather than just being limited to a particular area. And focusing more on health promotion and disease prevention since ‘prevention is better than cure’. All these initiatives are because the universities and the schools wants to prepare their graduates to deal with evolving health care system (IOM Forum on Future of Nursing Summary, 2010, Par 1).
High demand for nurses during the past 10 years produced a higher amount of nurses with an entry level education. Institute of Medicine’s study emphasizes that to handle today’s challenges in healthcare needs highly educated nurses. This study also recommending to have 80% BSN (Bachelor of Science in nursing) prepared nurses in health care by the year of 2020.This committee also recommends for a lifelong learning process for both nurses and the faculty members.
