Reflective Essay
For the 21st Century Readiness Project, I started doing research on Teen Crimes. This stuck out to me the most because Hoke County High School has been impacted in a way that was unimaginable by this very topic. When teenagers are out in the world without an adult present, the door is open for any situation. Teen crime is going to continue to have severe consequences if nothing is done to prevent it. There are several theories as to why teens act out in violence, which results in many rules and regulations at schools and other places that there were not before, but can be prevented by using several different avenues including the family, schools, and the community.
The new knowledge I learned about my subject is the way teens react to conflict and any other situation will affect their lives as well as others in the future. In order to make a change, parents, teachers, and the community, have to first start with themselves. Their actions reflect on the teens around them. Teens should have a better way to occupy their time instead of doing things that they are not suppose to. Positive role models play a large part in teens lives.
It was a wonderful experience working with my mentor. Called Into Actions’ mission is to change and inspire youth to achieve success in multiple areas of their lives by offering prevention programs and enrichment activities that build self-esteem, character, and leadership skills. I participated in the PDY (Positive Direction for Youth) conference and it impacted my life in every way. I was able to learn something new from everyone I met. We talked about choosing to do what’s right when wrong is available. It was impressing how the youth worked together as a team and had fun while making a difference in the community.
