Roles of Managers within the Functional Areas of Business
There are many responsibilities that managers have to take into account. These responsibilities are sub-categorized as functional areas, and they range from human resources, to accounting, to leadership all the way to marketing. Managers have to take into account these functional areas to make sure that they guide their employees towards the goals of the company. Not all managers fully use the functional areas, as their job requirements do not encompass the need for them. There are a few areas that all managers should apply to their jobs. These are Human Resource and Leadership.
Leadership is one of those qualities that every manager should possess. It helps the manager in performing his managerial duties in respect to his subordinates. Gillian and Siiwardena (2013) state that modern theories propose two types of leadership; transactional, which attempts to preserve the status quo, and transformational, which seeks to inspire and engage the emotions of individuals in organizations. These two theories are two different kinds of leadership models, since one seeks to maintain leadership through compensation and reward, while the other maintains leadership by concentrating on the relationship of managers and employees. However, “leadership and management are not synonymous. A manager is an individual who holds an office to which roles are attached, whereas leadership is one of the roles attached to the office of manager” (Gillian & Siriwardena, 2013, p.254). Managers must be leaders and show their leadership in their department or company. They must be able to guide their employees towards the goals of the company.
