Find out what your organization, your own and your learner needs are so you can plan and enable learning. By going through the initial assessments with your students you can identify their preferred learning style and prepare you sessions. Initial assessment is vital in this case as it is used to determine the level of the learner. It provides information about the learner, learner’s background, individual preferred learning style etc. Initial assessment methods could be formal or informal interview, tutor referral. It could also be practical exercise or task given in order to identify the student strengths and weaknesses for example. And then you need to plan to meet the student’s needs by introducing an individual learning plan with set up SMART targets. It is important to assess and identify the learning styles within the group that you are teaching. This will help you with planning and choosing different teaching methods to help your learners achieve their goals and targets. It is important for me to know their preferred learning style and how they like to learn so I plan and prepare my sessions. It also helps me to identify barriers in learning such as difficulties in reading and the different level of functional skills and numeracy skills.
