Romeo & Juliet

Act 1 Scene 1
  * Benvolio(pg35):
  * ‘fiery Tybalt” “breathed defiance” marked distinction between the Ms & Cs; do we pity Tybalt at his death in Act3 Scene 1?
  * Romeo(pg37)the passionate and infatuated lover:
  * ‘With tears augmenting the fresh morning’s dew,
Adding to clouds more clouds with his deep sighs”
  * Even his father is aware that he has been crying (compared to Benvolio who states his own moodiness in a factual & objective manner)
  * Pg38“Away from light steals home my heavy son”;
“Shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out,
And makes himself an artificial night.”
  * Romeo’s dark mood, pretentious and overly emotional(Shakespeare makes us question if Romeo is truly in love with Rosaline/Juliet or in love with the idea of [being in]love
  * Light imagery:
  * Happiness
  * Hope
  * Joy
  * Romeo is locking daylight out does not want to find hope anymore(serious depression!?!?!?)

  * Pg38“Shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out,
      And makes himself an artificial night.”;
    “to himself so secret and so close”
  * Romeo shuts himself away from the worl, wallowing in self-pity despite not having been rejected; only passionate about love in a pretentious manner
  * Romeo(pg39)
  * He is determined to make known his pitiful state; speaks in a cryptic manner so as to emphasize the sad state of being in love shows his lack of maturity
  * Pg40”Where shall we dine?”
  * Romeo is easily distracted & probably not serious about the love that he is supposedly heartbroken over
  * Pg40 “Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health,
Still-waking sleep, that is not what it is”
  * Oxymorons
  * Romeo lists the contrariness of love; Shakespeare’s that one cannot exist without the other(love/hate, light/dark etc.)
  * Another reference to the senseless feud & enmity between the M&C, as well as the inevitability of R&J’s tragic love
  * Pg43”I have lost...
