It is evident that socialization begins at birth and continues far into the adult period of our lives. The process of socialization is inevitable and entirely necessary for every individual in every society. The first form of socialization that children encounter is their family. People are primarily socialized through communication with parents, siblings and other close relatives as well as through norms and demands as a secondary agent of socialization. Socialization is an essential process and rather complicated process, which can be affected by a variety of different agents. I want to begin with discussing how socialization can impact a person’s personality. Socialization is most effective during early childhood because children are much more receptive to learning at such a young age and can be easily influenced by family and school. Our first social experiences are with our parents, siblings and close family members. At this time the parents authority is highly respected by the child. As a person grows and becomes less isolated, he or she requires more connections and social contacts. There are many different agents of socialization that have played a part in shaping me into the person I am today. Some more than others have affected who I have become from birth to the present moment. I feel that these agents of socialization primarily influenced me during my early to mid teen years, however I am certain that they also played a role in shaping the younger me. Upon analyzing the various agents of socialization I believe that peer groups and mass media are agents of socialization that have had a far more significant affect on my life, with family and school falling closely behind. These four elements have all had a substantial impact on my emotions and behavior as well as many other personal characteristics. In this paper I will further examine these four significant agents of socialization and the roles they have played in my life....
