MEMO

Date : November 26, 2010
To : Mr. James Christian, Par, Inc. General Manager
From : Mr. Kontol Cibai
Ref : Current & New Golf Ball Analysis

The aim of this memo is to provide the needed parties with the result of the data about comparison between the current product of golf ball with the newest prototype. Main objective bestowed upon the research of the newest ball prorotype is to invent a new product with improved durability.

The new golf ball is being designed to resist cuts and also still offer comparable driving distances to current golf ball. To compare about the driving distances for the two balls, 40 balls of both the new and current models were subjected to distance tests. Par, Inc may claim that the new golf ball has the same / better driving distance. But from the test results, we got the sample average for the current golf ball was 270.275 yard and the sample average for the new golf ball was 267.50 yard.   On average, the current golf ball had a 2.775 yard advantage. So from the results, we can see that the data doesn’t provide statistical evidence to conclude that the new golf ball has lower average driving distance than the current golf ball.

I’ve included in this memo the result of descriptive statistics on current and new golf ball. We can see for the current golf ball, 50% of the driving distance is above 270 yard and 50% is below 270 yard. As for the new golf ball, 50% of the driving distance is above 265 yard and 50% is below 265 yard. The standard deviation for current ball and new ball are 8.75 and 9.89, which is indicates that the data didn’t spread out over a large range of values.

I also develop 95% confidence interval for the population mean of each model. I can say 95% confident that the population mean for 40 current golf balls is between 267.52 yard and 273.03 yard. For the new golf ball, 95% confident that the population mean for 40 balls is between 264.34 yard and 270.66 yard. I also develop 95%...
