THE ALCHEMIST

The protagonist of the story is Santiago. Santiago , believing a dream leaves for Egypt in search of treasure. Early in his journey, he meets an old king, Melchizedek who introduces the idea of personal legend. Your personal legend ”IS WHAT YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO ACCOMPLISH.EVERYONE, WHEN THEY ARE YOUNG, KNOWS WHAT THEIR PERSONAL LEGEND IS”. He adds that” WHEN YOU WANT SOMETHING, THE WHOLE UNIVERSE CONSPIRES IN HELPING YOU TO ACHIEVE IT”. Then he meets an Englishman who introduces Santiago to an alchemist who is believed to be 200 years old. Santiago becomes the true disciple of the alchemist. Santiago falls in love with n Arabian woman called Fatima and asks her to marry him. She says she will only marry him after he finds his treasures. At first he is perplexed but later learns that true love will not stop one’s personal legend, and if it does, it is not true love. His teacher, the alchemist states that” THOSE WHO DON’T UNDERSTAND THEIR PERSONAL LEGENDS WILL FAIL TO COMPREHEND ITS TEACHINGS”. Coelho wrote the Alchemist in two weeks. The book’s main theme is finding ones destiny. It is more self help than literature. The core of the novel’s philosophy that plays all throughout Coelho’s writing in the Alchemist is “WHEN YOU REALLY WANT SOMETHING TO HAPPEN, THE WHOLE UNIVERSE CONSPIRES SO THAT YOUR WISH COMES TRUE”.
