Unit 301: Understanding the principles and practices of assessment
Question 1: Define key concepts and principles of assessment – how do they impact on my role as an assessor?
The term assessment is a way of finding out if learning has taken place. Gravells.A., (2012.12) says “It enables you, the assessor, to ascertain if your learner has gained the required skills, ……” It is therefore important, as a new assessor to adopt the principles of assessment. These are the theories that should underpin my assessment practice with learners. There are a range of practices that contribute to good assessment practice. For example, effective communication is imperative during the assessment process. Regular and effective communication with my learners throughout their learning experience impacts on my role to ensure transparency: that they are clear on assessment arrangements and what I would be expecting to see during an assessment of their practice or knowledge. Effective and professional communication is also required when liasing with the learners workplace. For instance, one of my roles is to book assessments at a convenient time for schools and day care settings, as well as regularly discussing the learners’ progress with them at a professional level. Communication also involves other personnel involved in the process as whole, such as an Internal quality assurer and an external quality assurer. This links in with another principle and practice, standardisation, which impacts on my role as an assessor. Standardisation tasks that are planned by the IQA helps to identify whether all assessors and new assessors like myself are arriving at consistent decisions and follow standards required of the course and awarding body.
