Assignment One
Question One
Describe how you might contribute to a lesson given to a group of seven year old children learning to play percussion instruments.
I would contribute to a percussion lesson by supporting the teacher and pupils and this can be achieved by creating a positive classroom environment.
I would firstly discuss the lesson plan with the teacher to check what is required and what the best way would be to create a safe positive environment where we can maximise learning whilst minimising behaviour problems.
This could be done by:
Arranging a wall display of the instruments being used during the lesson, such as pictures or setting up an interest table.
Preparing the classroom ensuring there is enough space and that the area is clean and tidy whilst following health and safety procedures.
Ensuring the instruments and materials are for the required age of the pupils so that they are positively challenged.
It would be beneficial that I take the time to familiarise myself with the instruments so that I am comfortable in demonstrating them to the pupils.
Another way I can contribute would be to sit and help any pupils that are struggling or perhaps lack confidence. I could do this by working with them on a one to one basis or with a small group to help raise their self-esteem.
For example, if a child was finding it difficult to play along with the class then I could clap to the beat with my hands and they could copy this by using a drum or a tambourine.
Once the lesson is finished, I would ensure that all the instruments are returned, they are checked for any damages and the area is clean and tidy. If any of the instruments are damaged then this would be noted and reported back to the teacher.
I would then provide feedback to the teacher on how the children engaged with the lesson.
