Explain the legal responsibilities of the school relating to the duty of care and the welfare of the child?
All adults working alongside children have a responsibility to keep them safe . The school would have a senior teacher and they would designate them with specific responsibilities for child protection, the teacher should be clear about what children are on the children protection register and professionals involved with the family.
Any member of staff in the school have a duty of care to all their pupils as they have daily contact with them and are able to observe and detect the signs of abuse, neglect, change in behaviour and failure to develop. If a staff member has any suspicion that a child is being or has been suffering any kind of harm they must express their concern to the designated member of staff. Any allegation should and would be taken seriously. The pupil would then be informed that the information cannot be kept a secret and that it needs passing on. Any staff member that receives any allegations of neglect or abuse must make a written report of the conversation including the date and the time of the reported incident, the names of people involved, and the nature of the abuse and if there is any injuries and that they have been observed. The designated person will then act on this report and pass the information to the correct people. Sometimes a report is made and there is no need to take things further but the report is kept on file so if there is more reports on a certain child this might add up to a bigger picture if it is little things that can build up to big things.
