“ My God! It Talks!” These words were spoken by the Brazilian Emperor Dom Pedro II when
he witnessed one of the most revolutionary and historic events ever that changed society as we know it.
This event would be the day the inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell would unveil is
astonishing invention at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in front of a group of notable people. Bell
would become one of the most famous and notable inventors of all time, but he would do an abundance
of work before he could get up to that point.
During the time leading up the of the telephone invention there was already one popular
electrical industry, the telegraph. The telegraph was already a great invention and its wires could cross
as far as the Atlantic Ocean. However, Bell saw the need for innovation. Bell wanted to figure out how
he could send multiple messages over a single telegraph wire. The telegraph would transmit information
by an intermittent current, but Bell knew that sounds such as speech were much more complex. While
visiting his parents in the summer of 1874 Bell realized the key information that was necessary for his
invention. To transmit the voice electrically an intermittent current was not required, but rather
continuous electrical waves of the same form as sound waves. On July 1, 1875, Bell succeeded when
he transmitted speech sounds, however they weren’t quite clear. In the fall he began to draw up patent
specifications for what Bell stated as “ an improvement in telegraphy”. The patent would be issued on
March 7, 1876. After the patent was issued Bell continued to work on his invention and On March 10,
1876 Bell would hook up his liquid transmitter into an electrical current and for the first time Bell’s
assistant heard his voice clearly. This day would mark the beginning of something that shifted our entire
society. ...
