I still remember the movie poster showing a picture of a small woman holding the hand of a gigantic football player leading him onto the field, the movie, "The Blind Side" raised eyebrows of moviegoers. This movie represents the true real life experience of famed football star Michael (Quinton Aaron). The story is heart warming and very touching but it wasn't the easiest movie to market. The thing that sparked the most interest of the moviegoers was that a African American kid was taken in and adopted by the white family, the Touhys. This socialite family was comprised of a very involved mom Leigh Anne Touhy (Sandra Bullock), the dad who owns a chain of Taco Bells Sean Touhy (Tim McGraw), the cheerleader and volleyball daughter, and the loveable young son S.J. Touhy. This family helped Michael become a very successful football player and gave him a family that everyone longs for and needs. This movie tackles a lot of issues but it all boils done to the importance of family and love.
This movie deals with the growing problems of gang fight deaths. It shows how young and impressionable children and the youth are manipulated or strong armed into becoming involved in gang activity. With a dysfunctional home, drugs floating around everywhere and no one preaching the importance of education some kids fall thru the cracks and end up in gangs, associated with drugs or dead. Michael grew up in a bad neighborhood called Hurt Village and could have been a victim of his environment if not for the love and the attention of the Touhy family. This movie all the way thru showed how the family accepted Michael for being himself and how Michael was protective of his new family, The issue of racism was introduced in this movie when Leigh Anne's well to do friends sarcastically praised her for taking in Michael, but tried to scare her of the danger that Michael might try to take advantage of Leigh Anne's teenage daughter....
