The challenges consumer face when trying to make healthy choices and purchases
I believe everyone walk in to the supermarkets with intention to purchase good and healthy food. However I wonder, what is a healthy food and how will we make the right choice? Most of consumers now a day do not know where their food comes from or how it was grown. According to Robert Kenner, director of Food, Inc., 2008, “Most people have no idea where their food comes from … The fact that people need to write a book telling people where their food comes from shows how far remove we are from the farmer to our table.”
“The food industry doesn’t want you to know the truth about what you are eating because if you did you might not eat it – it is a world deliberately hidden from us”, (Kenner, Food, Inc., 2008) Using myself as an example, one day I saw the meat package label grass fed cows. I thought to myself “what in the world! Don’t cows eat grass anyway and why should I pay 2 times more expensive to buy the one with the label?” This show how blind most consumers are when it comes to the production of their food. Coli, other can get it, too … Some companies are now using a hamburger meat filler cleansed with ammonia hydroxide to help kill E. Coli!” If I haven’t seen this film, I would have continued buying the non-labeled grass fed cows’ meat.
The food industries want to keep us in the dark as much as possible, they even have their hands on USDA by putting their former lobbyist in the government’s regulators, who help created health claim which favor to these company. According to Marion Nestle, nutritionist, “The industry (food companies)...
