INTRODUCTION
The diversity in Southeast Asia is reflected by the legacies from different colonial pasts, different languages used, different religious orientations and different ethnicities in a demographic composition that creates the human landscape of Southeast Asia. The period since the 1997 financial crisis in Asia has been one of the most economically turbulent events in the region in modern times. The crisis put several Asian economies into severe economic devastation. The geopolitical situation in SEA is marked by continued instability, uncertainty and an increasing number of unusual and new threats. Some significant features in SEA are the ongoing weaknesses in the financial and corporate sector, poor transparency and the need for structural reforms. These problems lock the region to develop to its fullest potential.
This paper will go trough the key material thought in Modern Asia and International political economy on the South East Asia region. In order to explain how the historical events of SEA have influenced the current political/economic situation in Vietnam, Thailand, Burma, Indonesia and Philippines.

Burma
Burma gained independence from Britain in 1948 and became a federal republic. Burma was for a long time a meeting point for trade between China, India, Tibet and Southeast Asia. The country has a considerable amount of natural resources in minerals (lead, zinc, copper, tin), precious stones (pearls, rubies), timber, petroleum and natural gas. The British lost control of Burma during World War II when the Japanese army occupied the country.
