The purpose of this assignment is to discuss the collaborative approach of the multi-disciplinary team in the holistic care of the mentally ill patient, within the high secure environment. In accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council guidelines, (Nursing and Midwifery Code of Conduct, 2007 5.1) confidentiality will be respected and organizational identities will not be disclosed.
Holistic care of the patient being admitted to a high secure hospital is in place from the onset, due to a thorough referral and assessment process, which is carried out by a referral team. The team is usually made up of the Responsible Medical Officer (RMO) and a Registered Mental Nurse (RMN) from the admission ward, which the patient may be placed onto. Students from all disciplines may accompany staff on the referral assessment visit and this should be viewed as a vital part of their training, providing the student with a greater insight into forensic practice.

Collaboration is an interactive process, ‘Collaboration is an essential component of the professional nursing role in today’s social world.’ Hales (1998) which requires the individuals involved combining their skills, expertise and resources to solve a problem or achieve a goal; the sole purpose of collaboration is to provide optimum help for the patient. In working collaboratively the multidisciplinary team is able to exchange a vast amount of information and expertise.
