The Silent Killer
The Artist by Michel Hazanavicius was a unique, a one of a kind and a gripping movie, some people forgot about silent movies and how they were affected by it, but not me. This movie brought this feeling of astonishment for me; it was the best film I have watched this year. This movie has proven to be a masterpiece from beginning till the end. I felt attached to a few of the characters, I loved the transitions, the storyline of the film, and I loved the music.
Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo) was an underdog character that started from the bottom and reached the top of her career successfully. I like how she is very loyal to George Valentin (Jean Dujardin). Loyalty is a very important quality to me. I like how Peppy remains down to earth and humble even though, she became a successful star. I also love how spontaneous Peppy is. For example, she bought George’s antiques and belongings in that auction scene. I found that very touching and heartwarming. I relate to her because I too rose from being an underdog to a person who is proud and self-confidant of what they do. Like Peppy, loyalty is the best thing about my character, no matter what the problems, consequences and misunderstandings that I have with my friends I will stay true to them and be beside them until the end. I also grew fond of the character Clifton (James Cromwell) because he also was very loyal to George Valentin. When George’s career was going down the drain, Clifton stayed even though he did not receive pay for a whole year. That shows true loyalty and friendship.
The transitions and storyline within the film are brilliant. For example, when they incorporated Foley sound into George’s nightmare, they were illustrating the beginnings of sound in a silent film era. I felt on the edge of my seat during that scene. I was enthralled the whole time. I also enjoyed how George’s view of talking movies changed and evolved slowly from the silent film era into a talking film era.
