Inclusion, equality and diversity are about acknowledging and respecting the individual needs of the learners. Also helping and supporting them where appropriate. ‘Inclusivity is about involving all learners in relevant activities rather than excluding them for any reason either directly or indirectly’ (ANNE GRAVELLS). Equality gives learners the right to attend and participate their chosen course / activity irrespective of their gender, race, ethnic origin, disability, religion, sexual orientation and age. Diversity is about valuing the differences in people, in relation to gender, race, age, disability or any other individual characteristics they may have. As a tutor i should ensure that i take into account that all learners are entitled to be treated with respect and dignity. All learners are individual with different experiences, needs and abilities. When teaching i have to ensure that i give equal support to all learners and do not impose my own values, attitudes and beliefs on to learners.
Promoting inclusion by identifying variation in needs ensures that learners have equality throughout their learning experience. To embed these principles in my lessons i would use at least some of the following strategies;
Checking learning and generating feedback by doing tutorials and developing individual learning plans are essential to enable me to identify learners needs. I could also adapt the number of items the learner is expected to learn or complete, or give them extended deadlines. By using different visual aids, hands on activities and assigning peer buddies will also help to promote inclusion. At the beginning of each session i am required to initially inspect the facilities to ensure that all my learners are catered for ie toilet facilities etc. As a tutor it is my...
