Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, there are many examples of courage. Discuss how Harper Lee explores courage through the use of various literary techniques. Write 800 - 900 words.
In the engaging novel of To Kill a Mockingbird (1960 Lee, Harper) there are numerous examples of courage. The Macquarie pocket Dictionary defines courage as “the ability to meet difficulties and danger firmly or without fear; bravely”. According to Atticus Finch, (one of the main characters in To Kill a Mocking bird) “Courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what” (chapter 11, page 124). No matter how you define courage, Harper Lee explores the theme of courage widely in, To Kill a Mockingbird and it is one of the most predominant themes in the novel. Courage is shown through a variety of literary techniques including; satirical humour, accumulation of detail, and characterisation.
Harper Lee explores the different concepts of courage in, To Kill a Mocking Bird. A example of courage is when Miss Maudie the friendly neighbour‘s house catches fire. When Jem and Scout see her the next day they were expecting her to be very emotional and gloomy. Instead she is very optimistic and has a sense of humour about her. This is an example of satirical humour which is when people are able to laugh at themselves and see the positive in what is a negative situation. “Always wanted a smaller house, Jem finch. Gives me more yard” (Page 80). This shows true courage because she is being courageous and moving on from what has been a devastating loss. She looks at the positives in that a small house will have the advantage of allowing more room for her azaleas.. This is just one of the many examples of how courage is shown in, To Kill a Mockingbird.
“She was horrible. Her face was the colour of a dirty pillowcase, and the corners of her mouth glistened with wet.”( Page 118) Another example of a courageous act was by Mrs Dubose....
