TO WHAT EXTENT DO ARTISTS USING COLLABORATIVE STRATEGIES HAVE AN INFLUENCE IN SOCIETY?
INTRODUCTION: Chapter 1
“Artistic collaboration is a special and obvious case of the manipulation of the figure of the artist for at the very least collaboration involves a deliberately chosen alteration of artistic identity from individual to composite subjectivity” (Green- The Third Hand - X-Introduction)
Whether artists using collaborative strategy, influence society with their work is a question the following chapters will attempt to answer.
From Relational Aesthetics through Collaborative Strategies to Artists who are particular exponents of collaboration, it is hoped to reach a conclusion as to whether Society has or is being influenced by them.
Relational Aesthetics will look at how the philosopher Nicholas Bourriaud viewed the relationship between artist, gallery owner / commissioner of the artwork and the audience. Bourriaud believed there were two basic ways of social interaction,
“Moments of sociability” and “objects producing sociability” (Bourriaud Relational Aesthetics Page 33) Bourriaud is conscious of the close boundaries and skewed reactions that close boundaries will give to a particular art-piece.
Collaborative Strategies will look at the various forms that collaboration takes. The artist working with a fellow artist (s), providing joint collaboration on a project, is entwining their viewpoints, and their strengths and motives to final piece.
