THE UNITED NATIONS AND PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS IN AFRICA: The Case of Nigeria’s Involvement in Angola.
ABSTRACT
International relation is a concept that defines the complex relations or interactions between nations. The interaction brought with it problems of suspicion and aggression, an interesting new relation since 1648 Treaty of Westphalia. It has resulted in a complex web of interactions that have made nations friends and of foes. Friendships resulted in alliances and foes in wars.
These conflicting interests among states form a web-like connection depicted as the international system. The multifaceted interest and competition has resulted in wars, two major wars and an aborted third war that threatened to terminate man’s existence. The multifarious interests but to mention a few are: power and world domination, colonialism, scrambles for territories and struggle for mineral endowment.
The end of the Second World War in 1945, brought with it a new era for the search for peace and possible ways to avert future conflict between nations. Hence, the United Nations an international organization of countries was created, to promote world peace and cooperation. This for the winning countries was another giant step taken as a preventive measure against states’ aggression and possibly war. Lessons were learnt from previous attempts at peace making and the failure of the League of Nations.
International peacekeeping has undergone a lot of institutional and structural transformation by different peace seeking organization after every major war. These at various times were the Concerts efforts in Europe, the League of Nations and finally to the United Nations today. The search for peace has been prompted by conflicting interest played by each state in the international system.
