What is this unit about?
This unit explores the meaning of learning disability and considers issues closely linked with learning disability support.

1) What legislation and policies are there to promote the human rights, inclusion, equal life chances and citizenship of individuals with learning disabilities? (1.1)
The legislation and policies that support the human rights and inclusion of individuals with learning disabilities are – National Health Service and community care act 1900, disability discrimination act 2005, equality Act 2010, disability equality duty 2006, Care Standards Act 2000 plus within our policies and procedures at work we have equal opportunities policy and codes of practice.
2) How does the above legislation and policies influence the day-to-day experiences of individuals with learning disabilities and their families? (1.2)
Getting a job or education, traveling, going for a drink or to the cinema with friends, accessing the local community are ordinary activities but for people with learning disabilities it remains’ difficult to achieve. People with learning disabilities have the same fundamental rights as any other people. A learning disabilities is a life time impairment and usually is reducing the ability of the people to live independently. People with learning disabilities should have a support for their needs and this support is given by family and care workers.
