1. Identify the current legislation and codes of practice relevant to the promotion of equality and valuing of diversity:
Race Relations Act 1976 and 2000:
This act is made to promote racial equality. With this act it is against the law to discriminate directly or indirectly against a person race. Schools are expected to promote equal opportunities and relationships between different racial groups including educational achievements. Race equality policies are also required by the school and should be linked with an action plan.
Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and 2005:
This act is made to stop discrimination against disabled people. This makes it illegal for shops and employers to discriminate against people based on disabilities. A person has a disability if ‘he /or she/ has a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on his /or her/ ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities’ as written in the act itself. Under this act it is mandatory to encourage schools to include children with disabilities into mainstream schools.
In 2005, the act was built upon requiring all schools to produce a disability equality scheme. This must promote the equality of opportunities and positive attitudes regarding disabilities towards pupils, staff and others who are disabled their self. Furthermore an accessibility plan must be put into place to identify how the school will increase access to the curriculum, improve the environment physically and how to meet the needs of the individual to support them with their disability.
Every Child Matters 2003 and Children Act 2004:
These two acts were created and put in place to ensure that children and young-people from birth to 19 years got structured support ensuring their wellbeing, making sure they can be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution and achieve economic wellbeing.
