1.1 Review the range of groups and individuals whose communication needs must be addressed in own job role.
As a senior member of staff I have to communicate with a wide range of people, each with their own communication needs. I must be able to communicate effectively with each of these individuals. When dealing with residents it is important to take into consideration their sensory and mental impairments, if a resident has a sight or hearing defect this may make communicating with them more difficult, and different communication methods must be used. When dealing with healthcare professionals i.e.; G.Ps, physio therapists, district nurses, mental health nurses etc, I may have to communicate verbally or using written communication such as; making telephone calls, sending emails or written correspondence, when doing this I must ensure that I am very precise so that information isn’t lost. I also have to deal with friends and family members of the residents where at a time of crisis I must be able to empathise with them to make them feel supported. When communicating with staff I must be aware of their individual needs based on their level of experience and technical knowledge.
1.2 Explain how to support effective communication within own job role.
As a leader it is important to have good communication skills, to develop positive relationships and share information effectively ensuring the best outcome for residents, staff members, visitors and healthcare professionals. Being able to provide and receive information is paramount when working with others.
Ways in which we support effective communication at Burgh House would be the regular staff and residents meetings. This gives each individual the opportunity to express their views and involve them with the planning and development of the organisation.
