Unit 501: Use and develop systems that promote communication.

In my job role I communicate with a variety of people on a daily basis, this requires different techniques and means of communication. These people are:

Service users

Service users’ family and friends

Staff
-------------------------------------------------
Professionals such as Doctors, District Nurses, Social Workers and Community Psychiatric Nurses.

Individuals who have communication barriers need support to enable them to communicate effectively. Individuals have a right to express themselves, their needs and their preferences; we must promote and respect this. A failure to enable communication is denying services users these rights.

Each of our service users is assessed before admission, this gives us a guide as to how the individual communicates and the methods found to be most effective. This information is gained by observation alongside information provided by the prospective service user, their family/friends and other professionals involved with the individuals care. We also use professionals such as speech therapists, General Practitioners, psychologists, occupation therapists, social workers and care staff to ensure our communication techniques are relevant and evolve with the individual’s needs. Providing effective communication will improve the service user’s quality of life, as a senior staff member it is essential that I establish and promote effective forms of communication and review these methods regularly.
