Use and Develop Systems that Promote Communication
1/ Be able to address the range of communication requirements in own role.
1.1/ Review the range of groups and individuals whose communication needs must be addressed in own job role.
In my job role I need to address many different forms of communication methods. This may be to engage in group discussions with staff members or residents. Some staff members may be from another country so I need to adapt my own communication methods to enable the group or individual to better understand me, I will also need to adapt my listening methods to better understand what is being said to me, I would use active listening.
Everyone is an individual and will never have the same preferred method of communication i.e. some of my residents are non-verbal so may prefer to communication by using Makaton or Picture cards. Another may have a hearing impairment and wants me to communicate to them in a louder tone of voice and to use facial expressions.
Outside agencies may wish me to communicate via the telephone, emails, and written reports or to have face to face meetings, by using a range of communication skills it will enable me to listen, understand information, deliver information, provide and receive feedback. I could then think of a response, have a debate with others responses, then come to a compromise and then finally make a final decision.
By understanding, putting into practice and giving support to peoples preferred methods of communication I am respecting all peoples rights to communicate in the method that they choose to use and then I am following the Human Rights Act 1998 which states that it is every person’s right to freedom of expression.
