Unit 053 (A)Promote Equality and Inclusion in Health, Social Care or Children’s and Young People’s Settings
1.1 Explain what is meant by:
a. Diversity – Diversity means recognising and understanding the differences between individuals and groups in society. Diversity encompasses ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, social background, cultural or religious beliefs, age and disabilities. In large cities there is diversity of ethnicity since different ethnic groups live side to side in apartments or houses. It used to be that ethnic groups lived in their own areas but this has changed with people moving into other areas to make a community that is different and vibrant.
b. Equality –Equality means the provision of equal access to opportunities and the same rights as other people. It covers age, disability, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, marriage, sex and sexual orientation. Equality means that nobody should not give someone a job based on their race, religion or belief etc but because of their ability or qualifications. If a black man applies for a job in a predominantly white office and they are the best for the job they should not be refused the opportunity because of the colour of his skin.
c. Inclusion- Inclusion is the action of including or being included within a group or a person or object that is included within a whole. This might mean that a child with a different ethnic background or language or a child with learning or physical difficulties may be included in a group with children who are able bodied or with the majority ethnic background of the area. This can also cover groups with different beliefs or clothing choices among others.
