M2: Explain the roles and responsibilities of two members of the children’s workforce in relation to looked after children and young people.
Introduction
In this assignment I will be discussing the roles and responsibilities of two members of the children’s workforce in relation to looked after children and young people. The two members I will be discussing are a health visitor and a social worker.
Health visitor
Health visitors are there to support families and also educate them from the stage of pregnancy to when the child becomes 5. The main role of a health visitor is to work in a community setting and visit people in their homes in order to undertake health assessments. Their roles towards looked after children is to make a Review Health Assessment which is done every 6 months until the age of 5 years. The aim of this is to ensure that the children and their parents/carers are able to access appropriate treatment and to be able to identify any gaps in the child’s health and ensures that the child is able to achieve optimum health. Health visitors offer parental support and advice on family health and minor illnesses. They also provide new birth visits which include advice on feeding, weaning and dental health and also do physical and developmental checks. Health visitors also provide families with specific support on issues such as postnatal depression. They work closely with nurseries, Sure Start centres to make sure that the health and wellbeing of the children and families from the area is paramount.
Health visitors also ensure that needs are being met by identifying the needs and providing the right support to ensure that the child and the family are receiving the right amount of care. Examples of this are when a health visitor refers families to specialists such as a speech and...
