“Developing excellent communication skills is absolutely essential to effective leadership. The leader must be able to share knowledge and ideas to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others. If a leader can’t get a message across clearly and motivate others to act on it, then having a message doesn’t even matter.”The above statement makes a huge impact, and in the role of the manager this is so true. Communication needs to begin with foundations of openness and transparency.Everyone is different with their own individual communication styles. In my daily life I deal with a wide range of personalities and abilities and my own communication style has to deliver to a diverse group with differing skill sets, and communication abilities.At the heart of all my communication is with TCF SU’s. Their disabilities range from Cerebral palsy, learning disability and hydrocephalus to brain injury and sensory impairments. It is important therefore that my communication is precise clear and accurate.I also work with a number of Su’s who have little or no speech. This is when having good communication skills comes into its own, particularly being able to understand non-verbal communication, eye and body movements and being able to interpret body language.
