Workplace Discrimination

Thesis Statement:   There are many kinds of discrimination in the workplace.   Gender
Discrimination and the opportunities for promotion are still prevalent even though companies
create safe holds in place to prevent discrimination and hiring practices.   Structural
discrimination exists and is an attitude of collective interactions among the society


Discrimination according to Pincus (1994) is a critical term in understanding problems associate with diversity.   He goes on to describe two types of discrimination, individual, and structural.   Institutional discrimination refers to the policies of institutions and the behavior of people who implement these policies.   Structural discrimination refers to the policies of institutions and the behavior of people who implement these policies and control these institutions, they are intended to be neutral but have a harmful effect on minority and gender groups (Pincus, 1994).   Companies have policy and procedure protocols in place that act as guidelines when promoting and hiring employees.   These policies are intended to be neutral and promote cultural diversity in the workplace.   In the incidence of this major company Maria has been employed for ten years and in her current position seven.   She has been passed up for a promotion and feels it is because she is Latino.   Maria feels she was discriminated against and the person chosen for the promotion was hired because he is a white male.   Further investigation revealed Maria is the only Latino in the company and the supervisors are white males.   The supervisor told Maria that she would not be promoted because she was difficult to understand and had an accent.   In review of her employment history she was counseled twice by her supervisor for attendance problems and she has been loud and aggressive when interacting with co-workers.   Alex obtained the position because he had better job evaluations, but he has less experience than Maria.   I believe...
