Trinidad and Tobago is a island that covers an area 5,128 sq kilometers (1,980 sq mi) and is located in the southern Caribbean, and rest just off the coast of northeastern Venezuela. The countries population is approximately 1.3 million, and is of mixed ethnic background. Some of the island’s ethnicity derives from West Africa, India, Britain, France, Spain, China etc. It is said to be the home of one if not the greatest carnival in the world. Other notable carnivals in cities worldwide are, Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro, Toronto’s Caribana, Miami’s Carnival, London’s Notting Hill Carnival and New York City’s Labor Day Carnival. Well being that I’m a Trini ( Short for Trinidadian) my vote goes to T&T, I believe that our carnival is the best in the world. Carnival is an event that is held annually on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. In Trinidad & Tobago it is perhaps the most significant event on the island’s cultural and tourism calendar, with many cultural events taking place in the lead up to the street parade on carnival Monday and Tuesday. It’s such an anticipated event that the locals spend the remaining of the year reminiscing about the past year’s festivities and preparing themselves for the next time. The heart and life of the event starts with the local music which is called calypso otherwise known as soca. Besides the music, there are many other events that takes place in the weeks prior to and during the big parade. Some of the major events are Soca Monarch, Junior Soca monarch, Panorama (Steel pan event) and the Carnival Road March. Tourist and locals are also entertained by stick fighters performing in the streets and by the beautiful ambience of designer costumes being worn by the masqueraders during the day.
