As the bittersweet aroma of a new school year draws closer, many youth begin to ponder about school, friends, extracurricular activities and yes... food. Many parents probably worry themselves sick during the day wondering about whether, what and how much food their child is having. The child makes many of these decisions themselves because parents are unavailable to supervise kids at school. Of course parents would ideally have their kids consume healthy foods. Before I begin I must state that in no means is this a critical report of the British Columbian Government or its various health authorities. This is simply a way of seeing how some kids in our community react to this. The government has taken its own initiative to try and resolve this worry by banning the sale of junk foods at schools. This includes from the vending machine, cafeterias and other methods of student acquisition. I asked the opinion of various youth in our community to see how this is affecting them. One stated: " I think that the government trying to ban junk food is a good way to start off a healthier Canadian lifestyle but overall, it is not working because kids always seem to find another source for their cravings." Another mentioned that : "Even though it is good to ban junk food, I think they would have made a lot more money if they hadn't". Although I must admit I didn't talk to the largest sample and cannot make any statistical judgements because of my sample size, I can tell you that everyone had mixed feelings about the ban. Along with the fellow people I interviewed, I also have a mixed feeling . I think that being healthy is an essential part of living. We are so fortunate to be living here in Canada and to have access to being nourished that It is a shame when our access is abused. The ban promotes healthy living which is great but it doesn't do it in the best possible way. More explaining to students about the reasons for healthy eating is required for this ban to work.
